![]() Slight perceived movement to the left or right means the incoming tone is flat or sharp, respectively. the strobe lights are on and respond to an input. when I powered on the unit, the motor would jump moving about. the power supply seems to be giving the right voltages. Hurst synchronistic motor was not spinning. It was the first solid-state strobe tuner, did not require calibration and allowed musicians to select one-cent increments. ![]() everything seems to work except the motor. In 1967, Peterson’s first strobe tuner, the Model 400, was introduced-variations of which would become the world standard for precision tuning for bands, orchestras, stage musicians, and musical instrument manufacturers. When the flashes of the neon light correlate to the speed the marks on the disk are going around, you get the same strobe effect you see with cameras and synchronized moving objects - the marks on the disk slow down as you get closer to being in tune until they stop moving. i'm trying to get a broken peterson strobe tuner model 400 working again and have hit a bit of a wall. As for how it works, basically it amplifies the incoming sound signal and flashes a neon light with it, then it has a disk with a whole bunch of black and white segments in rings that correspond to octaves at a fixed, though switchable, frequency using a stepper motor and a low drift oscillator. More complex tuners offer chromatic tuning for all 12 pitches of the equally tempered octave. If there is a difference to you, that is what the difference is. Simple test: tune your guitar 'straight up' on a tuner, then re-touch it by ear. This tunes the beats out, more like you are tuning by ear. I also put in a built in electrolytic mic with a switch so I could use it without an external mic, though other model 400s sometimes had a built in one. The simplest tuners detect and display tuning only for a single pitchoften 'A' or 'E'or for a small number of pitches, such as the six used in the standard tuning of a guitar (E,A,D,G,B,E). Essentially the 5th intervals are sharpened slightly, and 3rd intervals are flattened in these Sweetened tunings. ![]() Mine was reading a fair bit off what it should, turned out one of the leads on the polyester caps that formed the main oscillator had broken (it was like 4 caps bundled together), so reconnecting it brought it back much closer to calibration. I refurbed one a year or two ago and replaced the main filter caps as well as earthing the chassis - the default cord just floats the chassis between filter caps and when I touched it on a concrete floor (though not on wood) I could feel the tingle.
